Bayreuther Stadtgespräche: " Colonial Bayreuth - Why it still affects us today"
03.07.2023
Bayreuth's industrial prosperity is particularly based on colonial value creation - without cotton, sugar cane or tobacco, the local industrialization would have been vastly different. However, instead of tracing these raw materials and critically examining the circumstances of their production, racist and colonial language and images continue to operate in public space. Through this simultaneous marginalization and devaluation of people of colour, the city's colonial legacy remains powerful to this day. In the Stadtgespräch, Cassandra Mark-Thiesen, Stefan Ouma and Florian André Unterburger will go in search of traces together and try to initiate an interdisciplinary research and reappraisal of colonial Bayreuth.
The event is organized by the Institute of African Studies (IAS). The event will take place in Bayreuth at the premises of Iwalewahaus on 05 July 2023 starting at 6 pm.
